All children misbehave. Part of growing up is testing the limits of parents and other adults. Children are especially prone to showing undesirable behaviors under times of stress or major transitions (e.g., new sibling, moving to a new house, divorce, etc.). However, some children display a chronic pattern of inappropriate or harmful behavior that is atypical for their age. Behavioral problems in children may occur for many reasons. Therefore, it is critical to understand the antecedents (i.e., triggers) and consequences of the behavioral difficulties, as well as any underlying factors. A thorough interview and observations of the problematic behavior are the first steps in identifying a treatment plan.
Children with behavioral problems may demonstrate the following difficulties:
- Refuses to follow instructions.
- Has a low frustration tolerance.
- Engages in behavioral outbursts.
- Experiences extreme reactions that are not consistent with the severity of the situation.
- Bullies or fights with other children.
- Argues with adults.
- Does not comply with rules and expectations.
- Is easily annoyed by others.
- Intentionally bothers other children and/or adults.
- Does not recognize or consider the impact of behaviors on others.
- Blames others for mistakes.
- Does not seem to respond to consequences or limit-setting.
- Disruptive in the classroom and/or at home.
