Support for Parents and Caregivers

While individual therapy for children and adolescents is beneficial, support for parents is sometimes even more important. At CNC, we know that parental well-being is crucial for child and adolescent mental health. We specialize in helping adults manage the daily stressors of life and parenting in order to be effective leaders of their families. Through parent coaching as well as individual therapy, we work with adults to harness their strengths and identify the challenges that may be impacting their family relationships. We support parents with acquiring knowledge and developing new skills to support their children and manage stressors effectively.

Whether you’ve read all of the best-selling parenting books out there and are not finding success with bringing those strategies into your home, or whether your tried-and-true methods have lost (or never found) effectiveness with your highly sensitive or spirited child, we are able to help you translate best practices into what’s doable and effective for your family.

Some of the most common issues we support parents with include child and adolescent:

  • Anxiety (including OCD)
  • Low mood or motivation
  • ADHD
  • Twice-exceptionality (2E) (e.g., giftedness and ADHD)
  • Difficulties with following directions
  • Emotion dysregulation
  • Meltdowns and aggressive behaviors
  • Sibling concerns

CNC clinicians are trained to work with parents on specific techniques to support children and adolescents who are struggling, including:

  • Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) by Dr. Eli Lebowitz
  • Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) by Dr. Ross Greene

In order to implement these evidence-based parenting interventions, parents often benefit from receiving support with their own mental health and self-regulation. When providing individual therapy for parents and caregivers, CNC clinicians draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to support parents with taking care of themselves first so that they can show up in a valued way for their families. Individual therapy may be especially beneficial for parents who have read all of the books and listened to all of the podcasts but struggle to align their actions with their intentions.

Many parents prefer the flexibility of virtual sessions, so both in-person and telehealth sessions are available. Clinicians typically meet with parents during daytime hours and often have immediate availability to work with parents. Sessions begin weekly or bi-weekly, then become less frequent as parents are seeing progress at home.
